State of the Family
Pastor Cecil Daniels
There is an
old adage that says, “As goes the family, so goes the nation.” To a great
extent this is a true statement. No civilization can stand very long without
strong emphasis on the family unit.
This is true
because the family is God’s idea. He planned for a man and a woman to become
husband and wife, and to procreate. The purpose for this is to provide an
ordered and stable environment in which to raise happy and healthy children, and
to ensure the passing of God’s truth from one generation to the next.
Today’s
world has attacked the family in every possible way. Marriage is discouraged,
and people live together and bear children, without the commitment to family.
All too often the parents split up, leaving children without the stability of a
two-parent family. With the mother working and the father absent, children live
under tremendous stress.
Parent’s
that do stay together, frequently struggle under the pressure of time and money
management, and the distress of raising children in today’s world.
Consequently, this produces tension in the home.
Kids are neglected and often left alone to fend for themselves, as parents struggle to make a living. At times, the well being of children is ignored while parents seek a lifestyle that is not conducive to rearing happy and functional children. The break up of the family is an immediate threat to children
Children are
devalued in our society. With the onslaught of immoral and anti-God movies, TV
programming, and music, the minds and souls of kids have been corrupted for the
purpose of making money.
Kids have
ready access to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and pornography. In fact, the library
and computers have put porn within easy reach of all kids. The only role models
for kids today are ungodly sports figures, movie stars, and music celebrities.
Abortion is
an abomination to God. Abortion is murder. Only God has the right to give and
take life. One in four pregnancies end in abortion. Some people even laud
abortion as a means of population control, lessening molestation and abuse of
children, and a lowering crime rate (Newsweek September 6, 1999).
It is a shame for a nation to say that we cut crime because abortion ended the life of potential criminals. Millions of babies have been aborted since the landmark Roe v. Wade case. They also say abortion has helped our economy by allowing fewer workers who would be coming of age to enter the work force.
